We sat down with Steven Lake, featured in the Hair, Makeup, Style…Oh My! episode to get additional scoop on his fabulous line of work helping celebrities look good in pictures.
What is one star you’ve worked with and really admire for how they look in pictures?
A man? Carson Kressley! He really lets his personality come out in all his pictures. A woman? Brooke Burke! I admire her for her inner beauty and sexiness in photos even after four kids!
You’re stranded on a island…working a celebrity photo shoot. What’s the one must-have hair and makeup tool you bring with you?
My Mason-Pearson brush and sunscreen.
You’ve done all the big red carpet events…Oscars, movie premieres, etc. Is there any special preparation needed for the biggest events of the year?
For red carpet events always do a trial run so there are no surprises on the big day!
Is there a “slimmer” hair style? Something that can hide the double chin or accentuate the thinner parts of the face?
Yes! Layering around the face will accentuate the thinner parts of the face and will be more complementing to a round face.
Top must have products for any photo opportunity?
For the face? Lip gloss, mascara and blush/bronzer. For hair? Shine serum and a light hairspray.

Thanks to everyone who submitted great questions at Ask Carson. As only Carson can, he’s answered your photo-phobia fears and problems. Keep the questions coming!
Patrick asks…How do you hide a double chin?
Aside from joining the witness relocation program, which just happens to be REALLY inconvenient, there are other ways to hide the dreaded double chin. It’s really important to know your best angle. Some people look better if they are shot a little bit below, some people straight on, and some people from above. For a double chin, I would recommend getting your picture taken with the camera angled downward as it will hide that pesky double chin. Make sure to keep your head titled slightly up when the camera is shooting straight-on.
Check out Perfect Portrait – Part 2 for more chin tricks!
Chrissy asks…Is there a certain way to tilt your head or way to help reduce a nose from looking so big in photos?
Chrissy, I feel your pain on this one. My nose used to look just slightly smaller than the state of Rhode Island in most pictures! But alas, practice makes perfect Chrissy! The best way to figure out the most flattering position for your face is to practice, find something that works…use it and abuse it! If you have issues with your nose, try to take pictures straight on rather than from the side. I also recommend lifting your chin slightly and tilting your head to the side which flatters any profile.

Angela asks…How can I get some great photos of my camera-shy sister for her high school graduation without her giving me the dreaded “roll-eyes, *dramatic sigh* are we done yet?” routine?
Make her laugh! Having her laugh while she is having her picture taken will ensure that she has the most natural smile possible and make it appear as if she is enjoying herself. Make sure the person behind the camera is someone she trusts won’t do anything crazy with the bad photos. Also, try to capture some candid shots of her interacting with friends and family. She will be thankful that you captured her special day.
Share the secrets of the stars with your shy sister – check out the Glitz and Glam episode.
Alexandra asks…I have a problem, I can´t find “my right smile” and I am going to do my first modeling job. I really want it to be good and show them that “I did it!” I want to try to look a bit more relaxed. I have looked at a few of your videos, they are great. Please help me.
Work it like the celebs do – get in front of a mirror and smile until you find one that works. You can also use your camera to snap some quick self portraits to figure out how you will look from the photographer’s perspective. Finally, make sure you check out LookGoodinPictures.com in January. We helped a new actor/model capture the best head shot for interviews in this upcoming episode. Trust me, you’ll get some great tips. Now start smiling… OR ELSE!!!
Stay tuned to our upcoming episodes, including tips for models and actors.
Paola asks…How can I get my guy to get a new wardrobe for himself? Everything he has is not flattering and makes him look older.
With the holidays coming up, how about you buy him a few classic pieces to give him a jumpstart on his new wardrobe? He might feel more obligated to change up his look if he feels you are invested in his appearance. You can never go wrong with tailored button downs, dark colored jeans and solid colored sweaters. Also, check out our “Camera Never Lies” episode in January, where we show men how to use their camera when shopping for the right fit and look.

Baby fever! We asked Carson a few questions about baby photography and what he learned from pro photographer Carrie Sandoval…
With the economy, many people may want to take their own holiday portraits this year. Can you share a few tips for parents of babies and toddlers on how to make their photos look professional?
There is no need to spend the money for a studio or professional portrait. Through Nikon’s Look Good in Pictures program, we’ve learned that you can do this easily at home. Natural light compensates for a lack of professional studio lighting. Also, keep the backdrop very simple to give the illusion of being in a studio. Also, black and white is a great way to stay classic.
Can you share some holiday wardrobe ideas for babies and toddlers? Maybe some serious ideas for formal photos and creative ideas for fun, less formal photos?
Great question! Many pro photographers have told us they prefer babies in the buff! It’s natural and their skin is so gorgeous that it’s often the best bet. If you’re going to dress them, make sure it’s simple and timeless. That’s right – no sequined Christmas sweaters and Thanksgiving bonnets!
What are the best locations for babies and toddlers for holiday pictures?
First and foremost, you need to make sure it’s a safe and secure location where baby won’t get hurt. According to our photographer, Carrie Sandoval, in our “Oh Baby!” episode, infants are best in small spaces like a basket or tucked tightly into a blanket. Those little guys are so flexible and they enjoy being cuddled in small spaces! For bigger babies, a basic couch or chair or somewhere for them to relax and spread out works well, but make sure they’re secure. You can use pillows as a guard to help keep them from getting too close to the edge.
What are the biggest mistakes most parents make when taking photos of their children?
Get close and then get closer! Take out all the clutter around the frame, get down on their level and make the photo about those adorable faces and perfect smiles.

I recently sat down with Elayne Fluker, Managing Editor and Anne Chertoff, Senior Editor from Brides.com to talk about some of upcoming trends for bridal photography. These two lovely ladies had tons of advice for choosing a great wedding photographer and feeling beautiful in your wedding pictures!
- When choosing your wedding photographer, personality is just as important as a portfolio.
- After you are finished with your formal portraits, forget the photographer is there. Candid shots are great!
- A new trend is for the bride and groom to take their portraits together before the ceremony. This allows the photographer to capture your expression when you see your bride or groom for the first time.
- When trying on dresses, be sure to bring a camera, so you have an idea of how you will look in your pictures. Be sure to capture the front and the back.
Be sure to watch the episode and check out Brides.com for the latest on all things bridal. Don’t forget: submit your wedding wonderings to Ask Carson!
